challenge 1: urban church parking

The process of solving the parking needs and site organization of this church was an eight-year process of negotiations with the city and surrounding neighborhood. Because the city prohibited a parking structure, our team designed a seamless blend of new construction (a parking garage with lower and street level spaces) with the historic architectural beauty of the existing church. The result was described as “a big step forward” by nextSTL.com.

challenge 2: site organization

CORE10 simultaneously designed the church’s new parking, playground and youth center. After in-depth interviews with church staff and members, we provided a comprehensive campus design that connects all of the church’s buildings with seamless circulation. In an effort to further improve this busy corridor in Clayton, the new constructs are hidden away from the quiet surrounding neighborhood.

The result: award-winning work

Our aim for the full site design, to provide a seamless blend of new construction with the historic architectural beauty of the existing church, was recognized by AIA St. Louis in 2018 with a Craftsmanship Firm Merit Award. Jury comments include:

“To blend a new stone structure into a structure that has been in existence for over 100 years takes a special craftsman. One is hard pressed to see what was new and what was added.”
